How did meditation move from the religious margins of American culture to mainstream biomedicine? Mind Cure: How Meditation Became Medicine traces the religious history of mind-body healing from nineteenth-century religious movements led largely by white women, to several African American religious movements, to early public-health initiatives, to the modern “mindfulness” industry. It also explores what got lost along the way.
